Legion, Healing, and Resurrection: The Prophetic Pattern in Mark 5
Yehoshua never did anything by accident. Every miracle, every word, and every action was intentional—revealing the greater plan of redemption that YHWH had set in motion since the beginning.
Mark 5 is a powerful chapter that contains three major events:
The deliverance of the man possessed by Legion
The healing of the woman with the issue of blood
The resurrection of Jairus’ daughter
At first, these may seem like separate stories—but when we look deeper, we see that they tell the entire story of redemption in order:
First, Yehoshua defeats the kingdom of darkness.
Then, He restores the suffering.
Finally, He raises the dead to life.
This is the Gospel in action. Let’s dive in.
1. The Deliverance of the Legion Man: The Nations in Bondage
“And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gaḏarenes. And when He came out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit... And seeing יהושע from a distance, he ran and bowed down to Him, and having called out with a loud voice, said, ‘What have I to do with You, יהושע, Son of the Most High Ěl? Swear to Elohim not to torture me.’”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:1-7 TS2009)
This man was completely consumed by demonic oppression. He lived among the tombs—symbolizing spiritual death—and was uncontrollable, a picture of nations bound by sin and darkness.
And what was the demon’s name? Legion.
This is a direct reference to Rome, the empire that oppressed Israel. Yehoshua was showing His authority over Rome and the demonic forces behind it.
What happened next?
“And all the demons begged Him, saying, ‘Send us to the pigs, so that we enter into them.’ And He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs – they were about two thousand – and the herd rushed down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:12-13 TS2009)
This is a scapegoat sacrifice. Just as the sins of Israel were placed on the goat in the Torah (Vayiqra/Leviticus 16:10), these demons were cast into the pigs—unclean animals—and sent to their destruction.
But the people’s reaction? Fear.
“And they began to plead with Him to leave their borders.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:17 TS2009)
They were so used to the devil’s presence that they feared the power of Elohim more than the oppression they lived under. How many people today reject Yehoshua because they fear what true freedom might mean?
2. The Healing of the Woman: Israel’s Restoration
Right after this, Yehoshua encounters a woman who had suffered twelve years of bleeding.
“And a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered much from many physicians, and spent all that she had and was no better, but rather became worse. Having heard about יהושע, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment, for she said, ‘If I only touch His garments, I shall be made well.’”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:25-28 TS2009)
The number twelve is significant—it represents Israel. This woman is a picture of Israel’s spiritual condition—unclean, suffering, unable to heal herself.
But she had faith. She believed that just touching Yehoshua would heal her.
“And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:29 TS2009)
Yehoshua’s response?
“Daughter, your belief has healed you. Go in peace, and be healed from your affliction.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:34 TS2009)
This is huge. This is the only time Yehoshua calls someone daughter. Why? Because faith makes us children of Elohim.
3. The Resurrection of Jairus’ Daughter: The Faithful Who Will Rise Again
While this was happening, Jairus’ daughter died. The messengers told Jairus not to bother Yehoshua anymore.
“Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:35 TS2009)
But Yehoshua’s response?
“Do not be afraid – only believe.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:36 TS2009)
When He arrived at the house, people were mocking Him for saying she was only asleep. So what did He do?
“And having put them all out, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and went in where the child was lying.”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:40 TS2009)
Yehoshua removed the mockers. They had no place in what was about to happen.
Then He said:
“Talitha, qumi!”
(Marqos [Mark] 5:41 TS2009)
And she rose from the dead.
This is a picture of the resurrection of the faithful. The world may say, “Give up, it’s over,” but Yehoshua says, “Believe. Do not fear.”
The Prophetic Pattern of Mark 5
This chapter isn’t random—it’s the entire plan of salvation in three acts:
The Legion man is delivered → Nations freed from spiritual bondage.
The bleeding woman is healed → Israel’s restoration through faith.
Jairus’ daughter is raised → The resurrection of the faithful.
This is why Yehoshua came. He is still delivering, healing, and resurrecting today.
GRACE Method
G - Grounding in Scripture
Read Mark 5:1-43 and reflect on how each event fits into the bigger picture of salvation.
R - Reflecting on Context
Why did Yehoshua go to the Gentiles first in this story? How does the number twelve connect the woman and the girl?
A - Applying to Your Life
Where in your life do you need Yehoshua’s power? Are you facing spiritual oppression, suffering, or hopelessness?
C - Communing with God
Pray and ask YHWH to reveal areas where you need deliverance, healing, or renewed faith.
E - Exalting God
Praise YHWH for His power over darkness, His healing touch, and His promise of resurrection!
Yehoshua is still moving today. Do not be afraid—only believe.
